Dieting before muscle gain

If you know me and have been around me recently there's a very good chance you'll have heard me mention my "diet". Now, I'm very aware that I weigh a pretty average amount based on my height and if I asked most medical professionals I'm sure they'd say there's no need for me to lose any more weight. But I'm not on a diet to principally lose weight.

RRRR

My, admittedly non-scientific, reason for losing weight is based on the assumption that along with calorie counting I can achieve the goal of a six-pack the in the easiest way. For back-story and context, it's good to know that over the last 18 months I've been able to motivate myself at work and feel healthy by giving myself some health goals:

Andy's weight

As you can see I've been quite good at losing weight when I've wanted to but I'm not as motivated when it comes to getting myself to the gym and actively doing things. Therefore, I'm trying out a new strategy - lose some weight so any existing muscle is evident and then get working on muscle gain while ensuring I only eat as much as I need. I'm not sure if it'll work but I feel pretty good and it's worth a try!

So, my aim now is to lose 3.4kg more - which will probably take me another month when I'll be 70kg, a full 13.5kg less than on Jan 1st - and then hit the gym. The deadline of 19th October is fairly arbitrary and if I don't hit it I'll give it until the end of the year. I envision I'll end up being somewhere around 78kg after I'm done in the gym but by then I hope the numbers will mean very little. The big question is what my target will be after I've got the weight and muscles that I'm aiming for! Any ideas?
