Non-work life reflection #1

So, a little over a week ago I gave myself the task of keeping a very brief diary of non-work things that I managed to do each day: 5 fun things a day and 5 other non-work things. The first thing I realised was that on a work day (Monday-Friday) I almost never do 10 discrete activities that aren't related to work. Unless I really stretch the definition of activities (does eating count?!)

But I figured I'd stick with it for the first week. Each evening when in bed I wrote down my 10 non-work activities and for the 7 days (Monday 19th August - Sunday 25th August, inclusive) 39 different activities made up the total of 69 entries (one day I could only think of 9 things). This was the first surprising thing for me, I thought I'd be doing the same things again and again but in actual fact my days were quite different to each other. In case you were wondering, Wii-fit was the most common entry and occurred on 5 of the 7 days - but that's more a now thing as I'm tracking my weight daily (see my blogpost on dieting if you want). Anyway, since it gets quite difficult to tabulate all of these different activities, I've decided to group them into 7 different categories:

  • Non-work work - includes shopping, tidying and cleaning the house etc.
  • Personal gain - includes wii-fit, going to bed early, playing footy, going to the gym etc.
  • Socialising - includes seeing friends, emailing people, going out, travelling etc.
  • Leisure - includes playing games, watching footy, long lunches, lie-ins, playing golf etc.
  • Necessary - includes listening to music and podcasts etc.
  • Relationship - includes all things girlfriend-related!
  • Other - includes driving, packing etc.

Non-work1

My findings from week 1 (above) show that last week, including the bank holiday weekend, I spent did more socialising activities than anything else but only just more than non-work work activities. I should probably state that my girlfriend and I were apart for most of 6 of the 7 days last week which explains the low number of activities spent together.

Looking back on the 'results' from last week I'm pretty happy with how I divided up my non-work time but ideally I'd obviously prefer to dedicate more time to leisure activities than the non-work work but at least I managed to fit in quite a lot of socialising and activities for personal gain.

From now on I'm going to continue taking a note of my non-work activities but I'm dropping to 3 fun things and 3 other things and instead of reporting it every week I'm going to only look back at it once a month. I'm also going to try and force myself to do more indulgent things...check back in a month and let's see how I'm doing!
