Travel with work

BagsIn January 2014 I was lucky enough to have an opportunity to travel to Colorado and attend a training workshop for the systems model Century (and DayCent) at Colorado State University (CSU) in Fort Collins. This was an additional part of my PhD thesis to try and tie together my measurements with model simulations and allow a comparison of DayCent with ECOSSE.

Getting the chance to travel with work is something that I value very highly and try to take these opportunities when they come around. Although the novelty soon wears off if you have to spend countless hours on buses, trains and planes, I find I work harder and more effectively when I'm in a new place and want to get out to see the sights. My trip to CSU in January 2014 was the perfect example of this and was, in fact, the month in which I worked the most number of hours during my entire PhD. But, it was also one of the most enjoyable months of my PhD, and a key reason why I'm now back here in Fort Collins doing a post-doc!

Flight over snow

I've been very fortunate that I've seen some great places while travelling with work. During my PhD alone I was able to attend conferences in Denmark, Vienna and across the UK, as well as my month-long trip to the states. These trips were all made enjoyable by the chance to socialise in the evenings after the work had been done. To me, this is a major advantage of a career in academia, at least during the early stages when I am still young and don't have kids that I'd prefer to be spending my time with. Whether the lure of travel with work will continue its appeal into the later years of my career is yet to be seen, but for now, I'll certainly continue to take those chances when they come.
